What happens when I call?

  1. A trained person answers. You can share only what you want.
  2. They listen and ask how you are feeling and if you are safe.
  3. Together you make a plan for the next few hours.
  4. Usually, the call ends with you staying at home with a plan. Emergency services are only sent when someone’s life is in immediate danger.

988 answers in English and French. Please call anyway. For Tamil-language follow-up later, see our list of Tamil-speaking services.

Reaching out is not weakness. It is an act of hope.

My safety plan

Fill this in on a calmer day, as a gift to yourself for a harder one. It is saved only on your device and never sent to us.

Thoughts, feelings or situations that tell me a crisis may be starting.

A walk, music, prayer, a shower, breathing slowly.

Who can I be with? Where do I feel calm?

Names and phone numbers you trust.

My doctor, my therapist, 988, 911.

Ask someone to hold onto things I could use to hurt myself.

People, memories, faith, or reasons that remind me why I matter.

Even the longest night ends in morning. Hold on — help is here.
